Swiatek, Medvedev, Andreeva dominate, reaching quarter-finals
In a day marked by rain delays at the Indian Wells tournament, Iga Swiatek, Daniil Medvedev, and Mirra Andreeva delivered commanding performances, losing just 9 games in total, to secure their spots in the quarter-finals.
World number two Iga Swiatek continued her dominant run, defeating Czech Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1 in just 57 minutes. This victory extends Swiatek’s impressive form, having dropped only six games across her three matches in the tournament. After the rain delay, she won 10 straight games. Iga will now face Qinwen Zheng and could potentially face Mirra Andreeva and then Aryna Sabalenka in the upcoming rounds.
On the men’s side, fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev overcame American Tommy Paul with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. After a brief rain delay, Medvedev quickly found his rhythm, securing the win and advancing to the quarter-finals, where he will face Arthur Fils. He could potentially face Hulger Rune and then Carlos Alcaraz in the next rounds.
Seventeen-year-old Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva continued her remarkable run by defeating Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 6-1, 6-2. Andreeva’s aggressive play and composure under pressure have made her the youngest player to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals since 2009. She now faces Elina Svitolina and could potentially face Iga Swiatek and then Aryna Sabalenka.
Inside the Baseline…
Swiatek, Andreeva, and Medvedev’s dominant performances highlight a shift in momentum on the WTA and ATP tours. Swiatek is showing why she’s a top contender, maintaining that level of consistency and precision that few can match. Andreeva’s win reinforces her growing potential; it’s becoming clear that the next generation of players is ready to make a mark, and Andreeva is at the forefront of that movement. It is exciting to see Medvedev find his form in this tournament, as he is waiting for a breakthrough in 2025.
