“I’d like to thank me”: Mirra Andreeva historic Dubai triumph

Mirra Andreeva makes history as the youngest WTA 1000 champion in 15 years, breaking into the top 10 with a dominant run in Dubai.

In a display of talent and self-belief, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva clinched her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, defeating Clara Tauson 7-6(1), 6-1 in the final. This victory not only makes her the youngest WTA 1000 champion since 2009 but also propels her into the top 10 of the WTA rankings. Reflecting on her achievement, Andreeva expressed gratitude to herself, stating, “Last but not least, I’d like to thank me. I just want to thank me for always believing in me.”

Prior to the tournament, several top players, including Paula Badosa, Ons Jabeur, and World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, predicted a breakthrough year for Mirra Andreeva, anticipating her ascent into the top 10 and securing a WTA 1000 title.

Their forecasts proved accurate as Andreeva’s performance throughout the tournament showcased her exceptional skill and composure.

Andreeva’s journey to the title was marked by impressive victories, including wins over three Grand Slam champions. Her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, praised her resilience and maturity, noting that such qualities are rare in players of her age. With this triumph, Andreeva has firmly established herself as a rising star in the tennis world, and her future prospects appear exceedingly bright.

Inside the Baseline…

Confidence is everything in tennis, and Mirra Andreeva’s victory in Dubai was the kind of breakthrough that cements belief. The best young players always have talent, but the moment they step up and actually win at the highest level, something shifts. She proved it. Andreeva didn’t just sneak through the draw; she dominated, taking out top opponents with a composure beyond her years. The WTA is full of rising stars, but this win separates her from the pack. Now, the expectations grow, but so does the aura of a player who knows she belongs, and the WTA top players agree.
