Exclusive: Daniil Medvedev calls for ATP to make the ‘calendar shorter’
Daniil Medvedev has revealed the changes that he would like to be made to the tennis calendar, that includes prioritising bigger tournaments and making more space for Patrick Mouratoglou’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS).
Daniil Medvedev has joined a growing number of players to express their desire for less tournaments, with the 28-year-old exclusively telling us how he would change the structure of the season.
“If you ask me, what I would do is somehow make a calendar, which is impossible to do with all the licenses now,” said Medvedev. “Somehow make a calendar shorter, more bigger tournaments like make them even bigger, almost like, okay, we still have the four Slams, make other six huge tournaments like almost try to make them as important as Slams put them in good spots in the good year.”
Part of Medvedev’s plan includes making more space for UTS, which is an exhibition event created by Patrick Mouratoglou, that opts away from the traditional tennis format.
Medvedev is yet to play any UTS events, but explained that he would like to if the calendar enabled him to in the future.
“And then, as you say, make space for something like UTS,” said the 2021 US Open champion. “Because right now, UTS is so limited in weeks they can do their event and they still manage to get top players, which is tough.
“Because I would love to play it, but I cannot like be, there was one before US Open, I cannot I’m preparing for a Grand Slam. There was one after Australian Open, I cannot I played the final, I’m exhausted. And like this it would have more time for events like UTS or other events that maybe want to take place with their different scoring system to take place, and I think this could be fun for a lot of people involved.”
The former No.1 added, “This would probably make sport bigger and then add other than the six huge tournaments make, make space for other smaller tournaments, and maybe lower level players to to shine. And like this, I’m sure it’s gonna give them more credibility, more prize money, etc, also. But well, that’s you know. That’s just utopia.”
Medvedev has requested a shorter calendar to prioritise the biggest tournament, but he also told us that it would allow him to play more video games including TopSpin 2K25.
“Yeah, I mean, I don’t have a lot of free time. So I play a lot of Rainbow Six, 2K[25] TopSpin and sometimes well, I said, Fifa, EAFC right now…And I I would like to play, you know, when I get old I would like to play other games, but need more free time and free time is limited in our schedule. So for the moment that’s it.”
