Ons Jabeur makes ‘difficult decision’ to end 2024 season
Ons Jabeur has confirmed that she will not compete again until 2025, with the Tunisian still struggling due to an ongoing shoulder injury.
Jabeur has not competed since the Canadian Open last month, having withdrawn from the Cincinnati Masters and US Open due to the aforementioned injury.
The three-time Grand Slam has only played 31 matches in 2024, compared to 54 last year, and has subsequently fallen outside of the top 20 for the first time in three years.
This ranking is set to drop even further, after Jabeur took to social media to announce that she will be ending her season early.
“This year has been extremely hard for me and as athletes, we know that recovery is part of the journey,” said Jabeur.Ā “Due to my ongoing shoulder injury, my medical team and I’ve made the difficult decision to step off the tennis circuit for the rest of the season.”
She continued, “While I’m taking time to heal, I’ll be dedicating myself to charity work and ensuring that we make a real difference in the world.
“Thank you for all your support, and I can’t wait to come back stronger! I will see you back on the court in Australia 2025.”

Jabeur will make her return to the matchcourt next year, with 1050 points still to drop from her ranking, leaving the 30-year-at risk of falling outside the world’s top 50.
Inside the baseline…
Although this is not a nice announcement to hear from Ons Jabeur, it feels like the right one to make. This whole season has felt so disrupted for Jabeur, who even struggled for results on her preferred grass courts and really needs this break to rehabilitate and get the treatment that her shoulder requires. And although her ranking will drop, it still comfortably enables her to enter Grand Slam draws and a lot of the bigger tournaments, so it should not be too much of an issue.
