Andy Murray ‘is the biggest fighter’ claims British No.1

Andy Murray has revealed his intention to retire after this summer, and compatriot Katie Boulter has described the former No.1 as an ‘inspiration’.

Murray was asked about his future in the sport yesterday after his second round defeat in Dubai, to which he responded, “Yeah, I mean, I’m likely not going to play past this summer.

“I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I’m bored of the question, to be honest. I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But yeah, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.”

And Boulter reacted to the news following her victory at the WTA 500 event in San Diego, revealing her belief that Murray should retire on his own terms.

“Andy Murray is Andy Murray. He’s the biggest fighter, the biggest lover of tennis, you know his attributes. I could go on for a very long time,” said the WTA British No.1. “He’s inspired a lot of players, especially in our country, definitely myself. I just love seeing him out there.”

The world No.49 continued, “Even the fact that he’s out there now and he’s still going.. I think as long as he’s enjoying himself and getting what he wants out of the sport, that’s the most important thing. When he retires, I think that’s on his terms and what he really wants to do. I can speak for a lot of people when they say they’ve loved watching him play. I certainly have.”

Boulter continues her run in San Diego on Friday, before heading to Indian Wells where Murray will also be for a potential final time.

Inside the baseline…

Everyone knows how much Andy Murray means to British tennis, but it is nice to hear such warm words from Katie Boulter about her compatriot. The key thing that she said is about how Murray deserves to retire on his own terms, with the Brit revealing his frustration yesterday after continually being asked the same sort of questions. Perhaps Murray’s retirement could coincide with a fun mixed doubles partnership with Boulter at the Olympics, if both players can qualify anyway.
