Frances Tiafoe: ‘I want to win the US Open this year’

Frances Tiafoe has revealed his ambitions for the season and spoke of his desire to win his home Grand Slam tournament after a breakout performance in 2022.

Tiafoe, who is the ATP No.11, became the first American to reach the semi-final of the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2006 and overcame 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in the process.

The 25-year-old spoke to ESPN about how his life has changed since then, “You know, my status has changed. I’m looked at totally different [now], and not only in the game of tennis but in the culture sense. It’s been a year of experiences for me [due to] all the work that I’ve put in. Everything is coming to fruition.”

Tiafoe lost out in his semi-final to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, and has spoken about how it will feel to return to the Arthur Ashe Stadium this year, as well as his big ambitions for the tournament.

“It’s going to give me goosebumps,” said Tiafoe. “I’m already really excited. I want to win the US Open this year and I’m going to give everything I’ve got for that event.”

Since having that magical fortnight in New York, Tiafoe has been part of the winning USA team in the inaugural United Cup, reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells and won his second ATP title on the clay of Houston.

These performances have risen the American to a new career-high ranking and on the cusp of breaking into the top 10 for the first time.

Despite winning a title on clay, Tiafoe does not believe that he has a ‘legitimate chance’ at Roland Garros, but does at the other three major tournaments.

‘‘I feel like I’ve got three legitimate chances every year, at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open… the French Open is always going to be a tough one for me,” claimed Tiafoe.

He added, ‘‘I can compete against the best players in the world, I can beat the best players in the world, I have, now it’s a matter of doing it when it counts, over two weeks and back-to-back.’’
