Andy Murray to play Masters 1000 event for the first time in six years

Andy Murray has confirmed that he will play the first clay Masters 1000 event of the year in Monte Carlo, with his last appearance at the tournament dating back to 2017.

Murray did not originally receive direct entry to the event in Monaco, but due to a number of withdrawals made his way into the prestigious event.

The British No.3’s last match came in a disappointing straight sets defeat to Dusan Lajovic in the first round of the Miami Open, but he seems to have moved on after a ‘great’ training week in Marbella.

“Just finished a great training week/holiday with my team and family at @puenteromanresort in Marbella. What a great place. Thanks so much for looking after us,” Murray said on Instagram.

He continued, “Now on way to @rolexmontecarlomasters for first time since 2017! Wish me luck.”

While clay is statistically Murray’s weakest surface, with a 69.9% win rate, he has had success on the dirt over the years.

The 35-year-old reached the Roland Garros final in 2016, and has won Masters 1000 events on the clay of Madrid and Rome.

However, he has been unable to lift the title in Monte Carlo with the dominant Rafael Nadal getting in his way on three occasions.

Here are all of Murray’s performances at the Monte Carlo Masters:

2006 –ย Lost in the first round to Jean-Rene Lisnard (WC), 6-4 6(5)-7 5-7

2008 – Lost in the third round to Novak Djokovic (3), 0-6 4-6

2009 – Lost in the semi-final to Rafael Nadal (1), 2-6 6(4)-7

2010 –ย Lost in the second round to Philipp Kohlschreiber, 2-6 1-6

2011 –ย Lost in the semi-final to Rafael Nadal (1), 4-6 6-2 1-6

2012 –ย Lost in the quarter-final to Tomas Berdych (6), 7-6(4) 2-6 3-6

2013 – Lost in the third round to Stan Wawrinka (13), 1-6 2-6

2016 – Lost in the semi-final to Rafael Nadal (5), 6-2 4-6 2-6

2017 –ย Lost in the third round to Albert Ramos Vinolas (15), 6-2 2-6 5-7

Murray will find out his first round opponent for the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters later today, when the draw ceremony takes place.
