Carlos Alcaraz is ‘scary’ for the rest of the ATP tour claims Olympic medallist

Carlos Alcaraz has been labelled as ‘outrageous’ by London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Laura Robson, who believes that the Spaniard is scary for the rest of the ATP tour.

Alcaraz returned to the No.1 ranking with his maiden Indian Wells title, but dropped back below Novak Djokovic after his semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open.

Despite not being able to retain his title at the Floridian Masters tournament, Robson was very impressed by the 19-year-old, “Honestly, Alcaraz’s level in that whole tournament [Miami] was insane.”

Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has since spoken about how the US Open champion has ‘many things’ to improve, which is something that Robson struggles to believe.

“I kind of struggle to imagine him improving even more, but he’s just got so much more ability that you feel like he could get to, which is almost the scary part for all of his opponents as he continues to develop as a player because you forget how young he is and how little time he’s really spent on the tour, and yet he’s just outrageous,” said the former British No.1.

She continued, “I just love how much he enjoys the challenge of competing, and every match that he plays, whether he’s playing really good or having a bit of a tougher day, it just looks like he loves the competition and playing in front of a crowd, soaking up the atmosphere. He’s just a joy to watch.”

Robson also touched on the rivalry Alcaraz has with Sinner, with the pair once again producing a memorable match in the US.

“I just think it’s a match-up for the future that’s going to be so fun for the fans on any surface. When you think of how they could potentially play on the grass because that’s a favourite surface of Sinner, who enjoys the faster surfaces,” said the 29-year-old.

“The amount of respect that they have for each other as well, pre- and post-match, they just have nothing but good things to say about the other player.”

Robson added, “It seems like when they come on court, they know they have to be at 100% against each other because of the game styles, how hard they can hit the ball, how well they move, they kind of do everything extremely well.”

The two exciting youngsters will not be able to play each other at the first clay Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo, with Alcaraz withdrawing from the event due to ‘post-traumatic arthritis’ in his left hand and ‘muscular discomfort’ in his spine.
