Novak Djokovic gets major boost as he’s cleared to make US Open return

Novak Djokovic will be permitted to play the US Open this year after the Senate voted to end Covid-19 restrictions.

Djokovic has been essentially exiled from the US since vaccinations were rolled out as the frontline response to Covid-19.

He has been resolute in his desire to remain unvaccinated and has openly said he is willing to take whatever consequences come with that decision. Those consequences were being forced to miss a number of prestige events, such as the US Open, Indian Wells, the Miami Open, the Cincinnati Masters and the Canadian Masters.

However, he should be free to take part in the US Open again this year after the US Senate passed a bill to end the Covid-19 Declarations that were put in place by Donald Trump in March 2020.

That bill will now pass to President Biden, who is expected to sign it.

Djokovic has won the US Open three times in his career, although not since 2018. He has a storied recent past with the tournament, though.

In 2020 he was sensationally defaulted when he accidentally hit a woman line judge with a ball between points. He made a strong return a year later, though, reaching the final and giving himself thee chance to win a calendar slam.

It ended emotionally, though, with Daniil Medvedev winning in straight sets as the pressure of the pursuit of one of tennis’ most rare achievements appeared to finally tell on the Serbian.

Novak Djokovic will now get the chance to add to his incredible haul of career majors later this year, and few would back against him leaving New York with yet another trophy.
