Gasquet, also coached by retired compatriot Sebastien Grosjean, spoke to French newspaper L’Equipe about former two-time Roland Garros champion Bruguera, who is expected to join 27-year-old on tour after the Australian Open.
“It’s not easy to find a coach,” Gasquet said. “I had been thinking about four or five names but a few were already taken. I wanted to continue working with a foreigner.
“I talked a lot with Sebastien and he told me that he knows Sergi Bruguera well. He has a lot of experience at high level, he’s easy going and intelligent. I think it’s a good choice.”
Former world No. 3 Bruguera won the French Open singles title in 1993 and 1994, plus the singles silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He went on to lift 14 trophies at Tour level, all but one (Bordeaux 1993) on clay.
Under Piatti this year, Gasquet won three Tour titles (Moscow, Montpellier & Doha) and made the US Open semi-finals before qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time since 2007.
