Good day for Brits on opening day of US Open

Daniel Evans was on fire on Court 13 as he provided the first big upset at Flushing Meadows with a 6-4 6-4 6-2 victory over No.11 seed Kei Nishikori.

"It's definitely a good one," Evans said. "That was pretty good out there to play so well and against someone so highly ranked. I felt pretty confident all through the week, and that was a good match. I wasn't worried.”

''He has no pressure,'' Nishikori said of the world No.179. ''He was playing a little aggressive, and I was kind of tight.''

Evans will face Bernard Tomic in the second round after the Australian made hard work of Albert Ramos, eventually moving past the Spaniard 6-3 3-6 4-6 7-6(1) 6-3 in three hours and 56 minutes.

Laura Robson joined Evans in the second round with a 7-5 6-0 win over Lourdes Dominguez Lino. "I always knew going into the match that I'd be a little bit rusty because I haven't played in a few weeks," Robson said.
