Watson, who was beaten by world No.50 Ayumi Morita, also lost in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last month and is yet to win a match since reaching a career-high of No.39 in the WTA rankings.
The British No. 1 raced through the opening set and opened a commanding 4-1 lead in the second, but her Japanese opponent bounced back to book her place in the second round with a 1-6 7-5 6-4 victory at Key Biscayne.
"This year I've been going a bit too long so I'm a bit burnt out," Watson said. "I've been thinking about it now for a while and I'm going to take a break."
She told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I was looking at the stats and I actually won more points, but that can happen in tennis. It really hurts, I think I just need to find myself, find my game again."
