Andy Murray ‘felt quite emotional’ at Laver Cup
Andy Murray says he took away ‘special memories’ from appearing for the first time at the Laver Cup.
Murray, the British number three, plays at the Gijon Open this week in his first appearance since competing at the Laver Cup. He teamed up at the event alongside his three great rivals, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
He told Cadena SER: ‘’I felt quite emotional because we were doing a lot of interviews and being asked about the last 15 years of our careers, although I was standing still, I never thought so much about this period of my life, the games I played and things like that.’’
The three-time Grand Slam champion was also present to watch Federer bow out of the sport at the event after a glittering 24-year career.
Murray felt that Federer teaming up with Nadal one last time was a fitting way to end an incredible career: ‘’I think it was a nice way to end his career playing alongside his biggest rival and friend Rafa. I think it was very nice to see it, it was very special.’’
‘’When Roger finished, seeing him with his family, the feelings of the players, of the public was very special.’’
Andy Murray had begun his campaign at the Gijon Open with victory, impressively defeating sixth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, 7-5 6-2. He will play either Pedro Cachin or Alexey Vatutin in the round of 16 on Thursday. The Brit hopes to improve his ranking as much as possible before next season’s Australian Open in January.
