Rafael Nadal follows Roger Federer out of the Laver Cup due to ‘personal reasons’
Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Laver Cup due to personal reasons after he helped Roger Federer bring the curtain down on his career.
Federer wanted to play his final match alongside Nadal in doubles, and the pair put on an entertaining show before ultimately losing to Team World’s Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock.
The 410year-old was permitted to bend the rules of the competition he himself co-created to participate. Ordinarily, players must play at least one singles match. However, Federer confessed he was never in good enough physical condition for that.
Now, after an emotional night in London, Nadal has bowed out of the tournament too after playing his part.
“Matteo Berrettini will be stepping in for Roger Federer,” the Laver Cup announced. “Additionally, Rafael Nadal has withdrawn for personal reasons. He will be replaced by Cameron Norrie.”
Nadal has had a tough few weeks with injury as he continues to nurse the abdominal injury that forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon.
His wife is also expecting their first child, making it an unusually stressful situation at home for the 22-time major winner.
“It has been difficult weeks, few hours of sleep, a little stress in general,” Nadal explained.
“Situations a little more complicated than usual at home. I have had to deal with a different pressure than what you are used to in professional life.
“Luckily everything It’s fine, much calmer and in that sense I have been able to come here, which was important to me.”
