Lorenzo Musetti has ‘no limits,’ says former French Open champion
Two-time former French Open champion Nicola Pietrangeli believes Lorenzo Musetti is the best of the brilliant Italian bunch right now.
Italy are in the midst of a golden generation of tennis talent, with Matteo Berrettini already reaching a Wimbledon final and Jannik Sinner beginning to seriously impress too.
Musetti has often been talked about as being well in the mix too, but he has struggled to deliver on his obvious talent so far.
He put that right in Hamburg last week, though, beating Carlos Alcaraz in a brilliant final to claim his first ATP title.
“In my opinion he is the Italian who plays the best tennis,” Pietrangeli told ANSA.
“I like him a lot because he is highly technical and plays less with power, which makes him different to the others and recalls the players of my time. Fantastic.”
“He reminds me of us old players and there are no limits to where he can get.
Lorenzo Musetti played some incredible tennis to beat Alcaraz in the final of Hamburg, and that came as little surprise to anyone who has seen him before.
What was more of a surprise, though, was the dogged fighting spirit he showed, with that often appearing to be lacking from him mindset in previous tournaments.
However, Pietrangeli believes he showed he has the mentality to make the most of his obvious talent.
“I called Musetti to pay him my compliments,” he said. “I must have said bravo ten times. He was fantastic. He played like a champion.”
That title in Hamburg saw Lorenzo Musetti jump 31 places in the world rankings to number 31 in the world.
