Stan Wawrinka pulls out of Gstaad, saying: ‘I am extremely sorry about this’
Stan Wawrinka continued his struggles to get back to regular tennis as he withdrew from Gstaad over concerns about his compete-level.
Wawrinka is a three-time Grand Slam champion, but he is only just back from a foot injury that kept him away from tennis for more than a year.
He has played at Rome, Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year but struggled for wins, and he says he does not feel ready to be competitive yet.
That has led to his withdrawal from Gstaad in his native Switzerland, but it may also be just the public line to allow him to get over to America early to prepare for the US hardcourt swing.
“I’m sad to say that I will have to withdraw from Gstaad,” Stan Wawrinka said on social media.
“Always, but even more in Switzerland, I want to play my best in front of my fans. I only want to go on court when I feel that I can properly compete. I’m extremely sorry about this.
“It’s been a long road back to recovery and I’m getting better day in day out. Even though I’m happy with the progress, I know that I’m still not where I want to be and where I need to be in order to compete and win consecutive matches at the highest level.”
“I’m investing in myself and the process to get back to be playing at the level I was playing before my injury.
“Hopefully see you next year in beautiful Gstaad! Meanwhile I will keep working hard for the rest of the season. Next stop is the US swing.”
