Incredible Feliciano Lopez Grand Slam streak ends after defeat

Former world number 12 Feliciano Lopez has crashed out of the Roland Garros qualifiers and as a result not one but two mammoth Grand Slam records have come to end.

On Tuesday, the 40-year-old was defeated in the first round of French Open qualifying as fell to Italy’s Gian Marco Moroni in straight sets losing 6-1, 7-6(4).

The defeat means that the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist will miss this month’s Paris Slam and the Spaniard’s record of 79 Grand Slam main draw appearances in a row, which stretches back to Roland Garros in 2002, will come to an end.

Feliciano Lopez held the record of consecutive Grand Slam main draw appearances since the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, when he made his 66th consecutive appearance surpassing the previous record of 65 held by Roger Federer.

Furthermore, Lopez also holds the record for the most consecutive appearances at the French Open which has now ended at 21.

Fellow ATP veteran Andreas Seppi , who entered qualifying this week having appeared in 66 consecutive major main draws back to Wimbledon in 2005, would have taken over the longest active streak after Lopez’s loss.

However the 38-year-old fell to a straight sets defeat against 20-year-old compatriot Giulio Zeppieri on Monday. Seppi made six fourth-round Grand Slam appearances during his streak — four times at the Australian Open (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018), once at Wimbledon (2013) and once at Roland Garros (2012).

That result leaves world number 20 Grigor Dimitrov with the longest active streak of main draw appearances at major tournaments.

The Bulgarian is set to make his 45th consecutive Grand Slam main draw in Paris next week as he hopes to win a maiden Grand Slam title.
