French veteran Gael Monfils forced to withdraw from Monte Carlo Masters
Gael Monfils has withdrawn from this week’s Monte Carlo Masters after doctors advised him to rest as to “not worsen his foot discomfort.”
French icon Monfils has enjoyed a good start to the new year, having reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the third round of the Indian Wells Masters where he beat then World number one Daniil Medvedev.
However, Monfils has been advised to miss the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters, the first clay-court masters event of the season, due to suffering pain in his foot.
The event, held in Monfils’ native France, is set to boast some of tennis biggest names, including a return for 20-time Grand Slam champion and World number one Novak Djokovic.
Monfils had been drawn to face World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz in his opening fixture and was drawn in the same quarter as World number seven Casper Ruud and World number ten Cameron Norrie.
Had Monfils enjoyed a good run, he had also been drawn in the same half as Djokovic and 18-year-old Spanish prodigy and Miami Open victor Carlos Alcaraz.
However, Monfils is hoping to return in time to compete in the Madrid Masters that take place between May 1st and May 8th as he prepares for next month’s French Open, his home Slam.
Monfils shared the news via a Tweet, in which he wrote “Hi everyone, unfortunately I have to withdraw from the Monte-Carlo tournament due to foot discomfort.
“The doctors advised me to take rest so that the problem does not worsen. I plan to come back for the Madrid tournament! See you soon.”
Hi all, sadly I have had to withdraw from Monte-Carlo following an issue with my foot. Doctors have advised me to rest before it gets more serious. I am planning to be back in time for Madrid ! See you soon ๐๐พ
