Becker, the world number 41, lost the first set 6-1 to the Swedish qualifier before rallying to complete a 1-6 6-1 7-6 (7/4) victory in a match lasting one hour 45 minutes.
Becker will now face fellow German Philipp Petzchner who fired 21 aces and broke his opponent five times to claim a 6-7 (7/4) 6-3 6-1 victory over Belgium’s Christophe Rochus in just over two hours.
Lukas Lacko, of Slovakia, progressed to the second round at the expense of Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin who had to retire with a hamstring injury with the former winning 6-2 2-2.
Andrey Golubev fired in 17 aces but it was not enough to beat Daniel Koellerer, the Austrian prevailing 6-3 3-6 6-3.
