Melzer, the world number 28, recovered to win 5-7 6-3 6-2 and set up a clash with either qualifier Florian Mayer or wild card Sebastien Grosjean.

Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci claimed a straight-sets victory over Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland.

The 22-year-old from Sao Paulo took one hour and five minutes to beat Chiudinelli 6-3 6-3 as he aims to improve upon his quarter-final showing at the Brisbane International last week.

Home wild card entrant Rubin Statham claimed his first ATP Tour win to beat fellow wild card Daniel King-Turner, the New Zealand number one, 6-2 7-5.
