Murray and Robson make Hopman Cup final

The number three seeds maintained their perfect record in the competition and will now play Spanish pairing Tommy Robredo and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in Saturday’s title decider.

For the third consecutive tie Robson and Murray had to complete their win in the mixed doubles, clinching a pulsating encounter 6-4 6-7 (8/6) 10-6 in a match tie-breaker.

It is the first time Great Britain, who had not fielded a team at the Hopman Cup since Jeremy Bates and Jo Durie competed in 1992, have reached the final of the mixed teams tournament.

Great Britain fell behind in the singles when 15-year-old Robson started brightly before being overpowered by world number five Elena Dementieva 6-4 6-0.

But Murray brushed aside Igor Andreev 6-1 6-0 before the duo, who had never played alongside each other before this week, teamed to secure their progress.

“I’ve got to say thanks to Laura she was awesome,” Murray said.

“She did a great job. In mixed the guys are supposed to dominate, but everytime I did I lost the points. In the end I let her do it herself.”

Murray had earlier continued his ominous form ahead of the Australian Open as he crushed Andreev.

The 22-year-old had been on court for less than two hours in winning his opening two singles matches and took just 48 minutes to claim his latest win against the big-hitting Russian.
