Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez ensured Spain would retain the trophy by winning the doubles rubber yesterday, meaning Sunday’s singles were reduced to best-of-three-set affairs.

Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil opted to rest his top singles players, Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych, after two matches in as many days but Spain skipper Albert Costa stuck with his original picks.

World number 102 Jan Hajek put up some resistance against Nadal before going down 6-3 6-4 while doubles specialist Lukas Dlouhy was defeated 6-4 6-2 by Ferrer.

Spain are the first Davis Cup winners to whitewash their final opponents since Sweden beat the USA 5-0 in 1997.
