The top-seeded Argentinian lost the first set to his Latvian opponent, but fought back to claim a 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory.
Del Porto will face Viktor Troicki in the quarter-finals after the Serbian upset eighth seed Juan Monaco 3-6 6-4 6-2.
Second seed David Ferrer also lost the opening set of his second-round clash against Frenchman Marc Giquel, but managed to turn things around for a 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 6-4 success.
The Spaniard’s next opponent will be defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German fifth seed overcoming Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7/5).
Sweden’s Robin Soderling was another seed who struggled in his second-round contest before beating American qualifier Bobby Reynolds 6-3 4-6 6-2.
And fourth seed Nicolas Almagro needed three sets to get past Lu Yen-Shun of Chinese Taipei, 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2.
Next up for Almagro is Sam Querrey with the sixth-seeded American dispatching qualifier Gilles Muller 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Robby Ginepri was not so fortunate against a qualifier though, losing out to American compatriot John Isner 6-4 6-7 (1/7) 7-6 (7/5).
