The 14-time Grand Slam winner, who retired in 2002, overcame Blake, the world No 10, 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-4.

Sampras said: “I think James was being pretty courteous to the retired guy. I was serving pretty well, but I’m not sure how James was taking the match.”
