Anett Kontaveit downs Maria Sakkari to maintain stunning indoor record
Second seed Anett Kontaveit beat Maria Sakkari in the final of St Petersburg to maintain her stunning recent indoor record.
The Estonian did not have it all her own way in Russia, needing to battle back from a set down to claim the title.
However, after nearly three hours of battling it out, Kontaveit came through to win it 5-7, 7-6, 7-5.
It was Kontaveit’s 20th consecutive indoor win, which includes wins at Ostrava, Moscow and Cluj last season.
She becomes just the sixth woman in history to win 20 or more consecutive matches indoors and the first since Justine Henin did it 12 years ago.
Steffi Graf 43 wins (1989-1990)
Monica Seles 32 wins (1991-1993)
Lindsay Davenport 22 wins (2001-2002)
Justine Henin 22 wins (2007-2010)
Jana Novotna (1994)
