Kanepi clears first round

On a rain-affected day, fifth seed Kanepi overcame a shaky start to see off Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 4-6 6-3 6-4.

Marta Domachowska also advanced to the second round with a 6-4 7-5 victory over local wild card Aiko Nakamura, while Ayumi Morita brought some cheer to the home crowd with a 6-1 6-4 success over New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic.

In the men’s event, Ivo Minar and Amer Delic were among the first-round winners with only four matches completed due to the weather.
