Djokovic’s 17-year-old brother – Marko – made his first ATP main-draw appearance at this event earlier in the week, but was quickly brushed aside by fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round.

Novak Djokovic and Nieminen were potential semi-final opponents, but that match will not happen as the Finn was upset 6-4 3-6 6-3 by Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in other second-round play Thursday.

Novak Djokovic, who is 56-13 with three titles this season, will face sixth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden next.

Mahut advanced to take on third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, who got past Italy’s Simone Bolelli 7-5 6-1.

Jurgen Melzer kept alive his hopes of winning a second career title by forging a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win over Serb Viktor Troicki.

The Austrian will face second-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters.

Also clinching a spot in the round of eight was German Philipp Petzschner, a 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-1 winner over compatriot Mischa Zverev.
