The fifth-seeded Verdasco cruised to a 6-3 6-3 victory over Bobby Reynolds, remaining perfect in three career meetings against the American.

Querrey had a tougher time in his first-round match, storming from behind to claim a 1-6 6-2 7-6 (7/4) victory over American compatriot Jesse Levine.

After winning only 17 of 43 points (40%) and suffering six break points in the opening set, Querrey fired four aces and won two of four break points en route to claiming the second. The world number 39 was too much for Levine in the third set, outlasting him in the tie-breaker to earn the win in one hour, 42 minutes.

Querrey, who is seeking his second title after winning his first career tournament at Las Vegas earlier this year, moved on to face German Bjorn Phau.

Verdasco, the world number 15, is looking to improve his form after a poor run leading up to this hardcourt event. The 24-year-old Spaniard has one semi-final appearance in his last five tournaments following his second career title at Umag in July.

He is making his first appearance here and next will face countryman and former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Switzerland’s Jean-Claude Scherrer, Dudi Sela of Israel, USA’s Brendan Evans, Go Soeda of Japan and Czech Ivo Minar also advanced to the second round.
