‘I am proud to share this era with you,’ Roger Federer tells Rafael Nadal after Australian Open win
Roger Federer has told Rafael Nadal he is ‘proud’ to share this era with the Spaniard after he won a record-breaking 21st major.
Federer and Nadal, and their rivalry, has defined the modern tennis era for many, with Novak Djokovic also muscling in on it making it even better.
All three were tied on 20 career majors ahead of the Australian Open, but Nadal has now forged ahead following a brilliant comeback to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final in Melbourne.
Afterwards, Roger Federer was quick to pay tribute to his long-time rival, saying: “What a match!
“To my friend and great rival Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles tiles.
“A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing.
“Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.
“I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me for the past 18 years.
“I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!”
