Cas overturn Volandri ban

Volandri received a three-month ban from the ATP for a doping offence after testing positive for salbutamol in Indian Wells last year.

The 28-year-old did have a medical exemption from the International Tennis Federation to use salbutamol, an asthma medication, but the ITF deemed that his use of the drug was beyond therapeutic needs.

CAS cancelled the ban that was set to last through to April 14 and requested that all prize money and ranking points earned from the date of the failed test until the beginning of his suspension be handed back to the player.

“It’s my most beautiful victory in tennis without using a racket,” said Volandri to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“CAS has recognised my good faith, I used the medicine for therapeutic reasons and the punishment was excessive.

“Finally, I can start playing again. At 28 I don’t feel old.

“I’m fired by anger for the injustice I’ve experienced and I’m full of determination to take achieve at a high level.

“Fortunately, I haven’t lost a day of training.”
