Spanish tennis legend could be destined for lengthy jail term

A famous Spanish tennis player who won over €17m in prize money is facing more than 4 years in jail if prosecutors can prove their accusations

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, winner of 29 WTA titles in a long and illustrious career, is facing financial ruin and a criminal prosecution that may lead to a lengthy jail term. The darling os Spanish tennis during the 1990’s has been battling financial catastrophe for a number of years but now, with problems mounting, Spanish prosectors are accusing her a deliberately moving her assets to avoid having to pay off her debts.

The report in El Pais says that Vicario had built up a €5.2m tax debt to the Bank of Luxembourg after being found guilty of tax evasion which she never paid.

Sanchez Vicario and her former husband Josep Santacana allegedly created a plan to hide their assets to avoid having to pay the money owed.

The long running saga started when Sanchez Vicario revealed that she has been manipulated throughout her career by her parents who controlled all aspects of her life.
