Zvonareva secures last-eight spot

World number five Zvonareva broke her opponent’s serve midway through the first set before closing out the remaining games.

Zvonareva then took control in the second set as she broke Shvedova’s serve early before going on to secure the set and the match in one hour and 40 minutes. The Russian will play fifth seed Peng Shuai of China in the last eight.

Meanwhile, second seed Caroline Wozniacki secured her passage into the next round when her opponent Ksenia Pervak retired through injury.

The Dane was leading 6-7 (4/7) 6-2 3-0 when Pervak, who last month defeated Britain’s Laura Robson to win the Australian Open girls’ singles title, called it a day.

In other matches, local favourite Tamarine Tanasugarn eased to a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over Neuza Silva of Portugal, Shahar Peer of Israel defeated Ukraine’s Yuliya Beygelzimer 6-4 6-1, Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova saw off Ivana Lisjak of Croatia 6-4 2-6 6-2 and Sania Mirza of India beat Russian Vitalia Diatchenko 6-4 6-0.
