The fourth-seeded Stepanek dropped the opening set but responded well, clinching a 5-7 6-3 6-1 triumph in one hour and 54 minutes.

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Christophe Rochus overcame Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-2 7-6 (9/7) and will next face Germany’s Tommy Haas, who advanced with a 6-1 7-6 (10/8) victory over wild card Lars Poerschke.

American Taylor Dent cruised to a 6-3 6-4 victory over countryman Bobby Reynolds, while France’s Florent Serra defeated Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 7-5 6-7 (1/7) 6-4.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori inflicted a 7-5 6-2 defeat on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
