The Chilean has enjoyed much success on his home soil having claimed the title last year as well as in 2002 and 2004.

Just as he did in his run to the title in 2008, Gonzalez met Cuevas in the semi-finals but while the 28-year old battled his way to a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 triumph last season, he made short work of Cuevas this time around.

Gonzalez, who also finished runner-up in 2005, never faced a break point and converted 3-of-11 chances to dispatch the number 171 player in just over 68 minutes.

A resident of Argentina, though he was representing Uruguay, Cuevas upset number Albert Montanes in the second round but fell short of his best ATP result, a runner-up effort in Houston last year.

In the other semi-final, fourth-seeded Argentinian Jose Acasuso dropped the first set before rallying for a 5-7 6-2 6-4 victory over number two Tommy Robredo.

Acasuso had his serve broken twice in the first set, but held serve for the remainder of the match. The two were on serve in the third set before Acasuso broke the Spaniard in the 10th and final game of the set to advance to the final.

The 26-year old evened his record against Robredo at 3-3 in his first tournament of the year after missing last month with a shoulder injury.
