Gonzalez routs Monaco

Gonzalez defeated Monaco in last year’s final via walkover after the Argentinean had sprained his ankle in the doubles championship, but even a clean bill of health gave him little chance against Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has yet to drop a set in three meetings with Monaco and is in search of his fourth title here. In addition to last year’s triumph, Gonzalez also captured the title in 2002 and 2004.

The 18th-ranked Gonzalez converted on five-of-nine break chances as he dispatched of Monaco in a crisp 58 minutes, advancing to face qualifier Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.

Cuevas followed his second-round upset of third-seeded Albert Montanes by defeating Chilean wild card Paul Capdeville 7-5 7-5.

After spotting wild card Juan Ignacio Chela the first set at love, second-seeded Tommy Robredo rebounded to advance to the semi-finals with a 0-6 6-3 6-4 victory.

The Spaniard won just 16 of the 47 points played in the opening set, but regained control of the match to improve to 4-1 all-time against Chela.

Robredo plays fourth-seeded Jose Acasuso, who ended the run of lucky loser Sebastian Decoud in straight sets 6-4 6-2.

Following a surprising win over seventh-seeded Augustin Calleri to advance to his first ATP-level quarterfinal, Decoud was no match for his countryman Acasuso.
