‘Not one to overthink’ – Former British number one reacts to Emma Raducanu loss


Former British number one Anne Keovathong admitted there was ‘not enough fire’ from Emma Raducanu as she suffered defeat in her Indian Wells opener.

The British sensation came into the California-based event having not played since her heroic US Open triumph a month ago, and was beaten comprehensively by world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-4.

Keothavong, who captains Raducanu in Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup team, said Raducanu’s body language was ‘slumped’ during the contest and that she ‘lacked fire’, though urged the teenager not to overthink her defeat.

“She got into a good position, she led 4-2 in the second set but played a terrible service game to allow Sasnovich back into it and never quite got a foothold.

“It was just error after error after error, the body language and the shoulders were slumped, not enough fire in Emma.

“She needs to go off and chill and calm down. It is going to be a tough one to take for her, she would have had high expectations herself, the confidence, wanting to show everyone what she was capable of, but it is back to the drawing board.

“She is still new to all of this, she still has a number of tournaments left before the end of the season so there is time to pick things up again, work on her game.

“She knows inside she could have done better, she could have had better presence, but maybe one not to overthink.”

The US Open champion will now head to Moscow as she looks to bounce back from a disappointing defeat at the Kremlin Cup starting October 17.
