Ash Barty undecided on schedule after Indian Wells as she returns to Australia
Ashleigh Barty has not yet made a final decision on whether she will play again in 2021, according to her manager Nikki Mathias.
The Australian star hasn’t played since she lost to Shelby Rogers in the US Open third round and has recently announced her withdrawal from Indian Wells.
Barty’s coach Craig Tyzzer indicated the 25-year-old needed rest after six months on the road, casting doubt over whether the Wimbledon champion will defend her WTA Finals title in November.
The two-time Grand Slam champion has now returned to Australia according to her management team, and her appearance at the WTA Finals remains in the balance.
“Ash has withdrawn from Indian Wells to come home and see her family in Australia,” Barty’s manager Nikki Mathias said in a statement.
“She has been away from home since March and with the two week hotel quarantine requirement to come into Australia it has not been possible for her to return home before now.
“No further decisions have been made on events after Indian Wells yet.”
The WTA Finals has recently been moved to in Guadalajara, Mexico and will take place from November 10. It is also unclear whether Barty will participate in the Billie Jean King Cup which takes place from the start of November in Prague.
