‘No idea how I won!’ – Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez reaches US Open final
Leylah Fernandez has sensationally reached the US Open final after beating second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semis.
Fernandez has had a dream run to the final, beating the likes of Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina on the way.
The 19-year-old can now add Sabalenka to the list after beating her 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe.
Sabalenka certainly played her part, as she suffered a crumbling of confidence whilst serving to save the match.
She produced a game of two unforced errors and two double faults to hand the match to Fernandez, who will now play her first major final on Saturday.
Asked on court how she won the match, Leylah Fernandez said: “I have no idea.
“I would say it’s thanks to the New York crowd. They never gave up, they fought for me.
“I just wanted to be in the finals. I fought for every point, Aryna just fought for the same thing.”
Fernandez will now face either fellow-teen Emma Raducanu or Maria Sakkari.
