Emma Raducanu US Open 2021

“It’s my own journey” says ‘Cinderella’ Raducanu as she outclasses Bencic to reach US Open semi final

Emma Raducanu has reached the last four of the US Open in her first ever visit.

Emma Raducanu looked fit, strong and composed as she continued her fairytale run at this year’s US Open by beating 9th seed Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4.

Radcuanu again had to overcome a deficit in the first set but from 1-3 she strung together five games in a row to take the opener.

Her baseline game is the backbone of her success and it was in evidence again as she out-rallied her more experienced opponent, picking off winners seemingly at will. The second set was closer but the 18 year old Brit oozed confidence to lead 5-3 and then hold her serve to take the second set 6-4.

Bencic is the reigning Olympic champion and had experienced what Raducanu is going through when as a teenager she also made it through to the semi-finals at this same tournament. But that experience didn’t help this time and she became visibly frustrated as the match crept away from her.

Raducanu has guaranteed herself a cheque of at least $653,000 if she loses her next match but many respected observers are suggesting she is the favourite to go all the way and claim the title. She’s still yet to drop a set in three qualifying and four main draw matches.

Her opponent in the semi final will either be Greek Maria Sakkari or hugely experienced Czech Karolina Pliskova
