Carlos Alcaraz: ‘It is good they compare me with the best’ after superb US Open run
Carlos Alcaraz has enjoyed his storming run to US Open quarter-finals, but insists he should not be compared to Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic yet.
Alcaraz got off to a flying start defeating British hope Cameron Norrie, before claiming his career-best win against world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling five-set battle.
The Spaniard pulled off another memorable comeback to defeat Peter Gojowczyk and reach his first Major quarter-final. However, the 18-year-old was forced to retire when a set and a break down to Felix Auger-Aliassime when struggling with a right adductor injury.
Alcaraz acknowledged the early comparisons to ‘Big Three’ but doesn’t want to put too much pressure on himself to replicate their success.
“For me it is good that they compare me with the best. But I do not give it more importance because I try not to put pressure on myself because they expect me to do what these beasts have done. Each one has to make their way.” Alcaraz said.
Carlos Alcaraz’s run to US Open last eight has made him the youngest men’s player to ever qualify for the quarter-final at Flushing Meadows. The Spaniard addmited that despite having to retire from the tournament, he is happy with the progress he made over the fortnight.
“I am happy with my performance here,” Alcaraz said. “This tournament has made me mature a lot. I have played great tennis. A little sad about how it went today, but already looking forward to coming back next year.”
Alcaraz also spoke about the incredible support he received from the New York crowd.
“I have felt very supported all week by the public, without them I could not have come here,” the Spaniard added. “They have made me feel super good. I have no words to describe the affection I have felt.”
