‘I have no words’ – Botic Van De Zandschulp continues fairytale run at US Open

The fairytale run of Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp continues at US Open after he produced a stunning performance to defeat Diego Schwartzman and reach quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old edged a marathon encounter 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, which was his second win against a top 20 player after beating Casper Ruud earlier in the tournament.

“I don’t really have words for it. I have played so many matches here,” said Zandschulp. “In some of them I was on the brink of defeat but I pulled through in every one of them. For the first time in the tournament I won the first set, even the first two. I almost ended up losing the match but I’m glad I won in the end.”

Zandschulp blasted 72 winners past Schwartzman in what was an epic four hour battle. The 25-year-old was cruising at 6-3, 6-4, 4-2, before Schwartzman saved match points and edged sets three and four to threaten an epic comeback. Zandschulp headed off court to gather his thoughts, before racing away with the fifth set decider.

The Dutchman had never visited New York before this tournament and he is throughly enjoying his memorable run.

“The atmosphere was great. This is the first time for me on the court (Louis Armstrong) and it is the first time for me in America. It’s been great,” he added.

Awaiting in the last eight will be second seed Daniil Medvedev who is yet to drop a set after defeating Dan Evans in straight sets yesterday. Zandschulp is the first Dutch male player to reach a Major quarter-final since 2004.

“Before the tournament nobody expected me to reach the quarter-finals here. I think they are amazed and hopefully proud,” he added.
