‘Emma Raducanu will be a top player if she improves in one area’, says Slam legend
A seven-time Grand Slam champion spoke of not seeing “too many weaknesses” in the game of Emma Raducanu after the British teenager progressed at the 2021 US Open.
Mats Wilander – who won the US Open in 1988 – believes the world number 150 will be a “top player” if she can improve a certain shot.
Raducanu defeated Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-3 on her US Open main draw debut after qualifying for the major without dropping a set.
The 18-year-old will face world number 49 Zhang Shuai in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
“When I see her play, I don’t see too many weaknesses. Her serve is good, her backhand is good,” former world number one Wilander told Eurosport.
“On her forehand, you can see that is where she needs to improve. If she improves the forehand she is going to be a top player. She is composed, but at the same time was embracing the New York crowd.”
Raducanu reached the fourth round of Wimbledon on her main draw major debut in July, and two-time French Open runner-up Alex Corretja thinks this will help her in New York.
“I think the experience of playing in London will help with the experience of closing out matches,” explained Corretja.
“I think she had so much pressure in London that now being in New York – she is probably enjoying it a little bit more and is more relaxed.
“She has been playing so many matches and she has been in New York for so many days – you get used to the conditions.”
