‘Novak Djokovic winning the Grand Slam would be monumental’, says top coach

A renowned coach thinks “nobody who knows anything about tennis” will focus on Novak Djokovic missing out on the Olympic gold if he wins the Calendar Slam.

Darren Cahill – coach of two-time major winner Simona Halep – believes Djokovic winning the US Open to complete the Grand Slam would be a “monumental achievement”.

The Australian – who works as an analyst for ESPN – was ranked as high as No. 22 in singles, as well as being a top 10 doubles player.

World number one Djokovic failed to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics – but could become just the second man in the Open Era to win all four majors in a year.

“If Novak wins the [Calendar] Grand Slam, nobody will say but… nobody who knows anything about tennis,” Cahill wrote in a Twitter post.

“He’s attempting to do something that no man has done since the great Rod Laver in 1969. It would be a monumental achievement. All focus to turn [to] New York for ‘Nole’.”

The Serbian has won the US Open three times and finished as runner-up on five occasions.
