Jack Sock reveals the key to beating Rafael Nadal in Washington clash
American star Jack Sock admits he must improve key elements of his game to have any chance against Rafael Nadal on Wednesday.
The American prevailed in his opening round encounter against Yoshihito Nishioka, who retired despite leading 7-6 0-4 due to a calf injury.
Sock, who has had his own injury troubles in recent months, is relishing the chance to take on the Spaniard, who will make his long-awaited return after missing both Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics.
However, the 28-year-old admitted he will need to improve key elements of his game – such as his serve and forehand – to stand a chance of defeating the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
“I looked up and saw my first serve percentage after the first set and that’s just not going to work against Rafa,” said the former world number eight.
“I was able to get away with it against Yoshi [Nishioka] but Rafa will punish that and start dictating points so first serve percentage for sure.
“Depth on my forehand (is important) too. My forehand feels good, it feels heavy. Kind of like it always is. But I definitely need to get the ball a bit deeper than I did tonight to have a chance.”
