Novak Djokovic leaves Tokyo without a medal after mixed doubles withdrawal
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from his mixed doubles bronze medal contest alongside Nina Stojanovic due to a left shoulder injury.
The world number one lost his bronze medal singles match against Pablo Carreno Busta on Saturday in three sets, though showed no sign of injury during the contest.
Djokovic, who came to Tokyo eyeing a Golden Slam, now leaves without a medal in either the singles or mixed doubles competitions.
However, one world number one’s loss is another one’s gain as Ash Barty takes the bronze medal for Australia alongside John Peers after Djokovic’s withdrawal.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who has one bronze medal to his name at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will now have to wait until Paris 2023 as he looks to add another Olympic medal.
Novak Djokovic withdraws from the mixed doubles bronze medal match due to a left shoulder injury.
Ashleigh Barty and John Peers receive a walkover against Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic and win the bronze medal for Australia.
