Daniil Medvedev suffers heartbreaking defeat at Olympics
Daniil Medvedev suffered a heartbreaking straight sets defeat against Pablo Carreno Busta in Olympics quarter-finals.
The Russian has struggled physically with the heat throughout the tournament and finally fell 6-2 7-6 to Carreno Busta in one hour and 43 minutes.
Medvedev, who was a strong favourite to win a medal in the singles in Tokyo, started the match well before surrendering a break of serve to the rampant Spaniard. Carreno Busta took full advantage, closing out the crucial opening set 6-2.
The Russian snatched a break in the early stages of set two to seemingly swing momentum in his favour. Although, Carreno Busta fought hard to wrestle back the set and broke to level at 4-4.
A second set tie-break swung one way then the other as both players battled for supremacy. The tie-beak and day belonged to Spain. Carreno Busta opened up a 6-5 lead and secured the match on his first match point.
The Spaniard will face Russian Karen Khachanov for a place in the gold medal match.
