Unseeded star will be ‘very hard to beat’ at Wimbledon claims former champion
Nick Kyrgios will be very tough to beat at Wimbledon, according to Australian great John Newcombe
The Aussie’s last competitive match was in February at the Australian Open, in which he lost an epic five-setter against Dominic Thiem.
Kyrgios planned to play a couple of events on grass to prepare for Wimbledon, but withdrew from Queens and the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.
Therefore the 26-year-old will head to Wimbledon with no grass court matches under his belt, however seven-time Grand Slam champion John Newcombe still thinks he poses a huge threat.
“I’m sure [world No 1 Novak] Djokovic wouldn’t want to play him in the first round at Wimbledon.”
“Look, there will be a lot of top players who won’t want to see Nick in their section of the draw. He’s underdone but he’s going to be very hard to beat, put it like that.” Newcombe said.
Due to his long lay-off, Kyrgios will not be seeded at Wimbledon which could result in a tough draw.
“If he has one really tough match, he might have trouble coming up for the next match.”
“I imagine the top guys will be hoping that he’ll meet a very good player, not one of the very good ones but a solid player who puts a lot of balls back and then Nick will get frustrated.” Newcombe added.
