Diego Schwartzman breezes into French Open second round


World No. 10 Diego Schwartzman reached the second round of the 2021 French Open with a dominant win against Yen-Hsun Lu.

The Argentine – a semi-finalist at Roland Garros last year – won 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 against the world No. 680 in an hour and 45 minutes.

Schwartzman broke Lu – who is playing with a protected ranking – three times as he lost serve once to win the opening set.

The 28-year-old dropped only two games again in winning the second set – in which he did not face a break point.

The No. 10 then broke the Taiwanese 37-year-old three times in the third set to seal victory.

Schwartzman made 58% of his first serves in the match and won a healthy 78% of the points when he did. He also won 57% behind his second delivery.

The Argentine won a superb 56% of the points he played on Lu’s serve, and posted a terrific ratio of 30 winners to just 10 unforced errors.

He will play Aljaz Bedene in the second round in Paris. His ATP head-to-head record against the Slovenian is 1-2.

Schwartzman has made the quarter-finals or better in two of his last three French Open appearances – and has an overall 66% win rate at the tournament.
