Garbine Muguruza upset by Marta Kostyuk at the French Open
Former champion Garbine Muguruza was stunned by Marta Kostyuk in straight sets in the opening round of the 2021 French Open.
The 2016 Roland Garros winner was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by world No. 81 Kostyuk in an hour and 29 minutes.
Kostyuk took the opening set convincingly by breaking the Spaniard twice after saving a break point in the first game.
The 18-year-old then recovered from 3-1 behind in the second set to win five of the next six games to seal arguably the biggest win of her career.
The Ukrainian hit a solid 16 winners and made 24 unforced errors, and won an impressive 74% of points on her first serve – which she made 53% of the time.

Kostyuk also won 56% of points behind her second delivery, and won 50% of all points played on Muguruza’s serve.
Muguruza’s struggles are well captured by her very poor ratio of just nine winners to 40 unforced errors.
After a superb start to the year, the world No. 13’s clay court season has been affected by an injury picked up in Charleston in early April.
She was only able to play one more clay event in Rome ahead of Paris.
Kostyuk will face Zheng Saisai in the second round.
