‘Roger Federer is preparing to say goodbye in a big way’ says two-time major finalist


Alex Corretja said he would be surprised if Roger Federer “played many more years” and believes Rafael Nadal has “at least two more years” to win Grand Slams.

The former world No. 2 – twice a French Open runner-up – now works as a commentator for Eurosport.

Federer, 39, played in just his second tournament since the 2020 Australian Open at the Geneva Open this week and fell in his first match to Pablo Andujar.

“I would be surprised if he (Federer) played many more years,” Corretja said in an interview with Industria del Tenis.

“I think Federer is preparing to say goodbye in a big way and getting ready to come back to compete with everything.”

Nadal, 34, won the Italian Open in Rome last week and is a strong favourite to win his 14th French Open title at this year’s event – which begins in less than two weeks.

Corretja said of his Spanish compatriot: “Keep in mind that Nadal has at least two more years left and he will take advantage of them to try to add a Grand Slam. I see him qualified for it.”
